Seems Mean-a Doing Carmina

The Sacramento Coral Society & Orchestra is doing Carmina Burana in May. My beloved, Significant One belongs to the Society, a very talented singer. I look forward to these big, powerful shows that the SCSO does, especially when I know the music as I do here. I want this organization, and indeed all of the arts to succeed.

So imagine my surprise when I find that the Sacramento Ballet is also doing Carmina Burana, and doing it fist, a little more than a month before the SCSO show. I understand this was a late decision for them. So why take this classic piece, one that another arts group is performing, when there are so many other great pieces to choose from? It can only hurt the cause of both organizations.

There has to be a huge overlap in fans that enjoy both ballet and professional grade classical music performances. Personally, I love them both. Would I be interested in seeing Carmina Burana twice in such a short span of time? Maybe if it was my all time favorite piece. It goes without saying that as the Sac. Ballet is performing at an earlier date, the SCSO will lose out on ticket sales.

I feel that large, arts organizations like these should look out for each other, help each other. As I mentioned, they both have a lot of the same audience base, but there is no reason it cannot be shared. Even if it is a competition between, and within, the arts, let that show in the quality of the productions. Become better yourself as other groups improve themselves. That is the best of competition. Don't resort to tricks to bolster yourself while harming another.
